The AFLW Pride Round Kicked Off This Week & Here's Why You Should Be Giving It Your Attention

Growing up in an immigrant family with strong Pentecostal beliefs, embracing my sexuality and individuality has always been challenging, filled with fear and shame. Gender stereotypes were pervasive in my household, with certain behaviors quickly labeled as “too gay” or “too tomboy.” Naturally, I faced lesbian accusations when I dived into a significant sports phase.

During this so-called phase — which clearly was not a phase, considering the appeal of the Matildas and NRL content — I often found comfort in sports and athletic environments, aiding in my self-discovery. However, it was the AFLW that truly provided me with acceptance and visibility.

Returning for its fifth season on the Australian sports scene, the AFLW is set to host its Pride Round this week — from October 8 to October 13 — promoting diversity and inclusion not just in sports, but across the community.

The ABC Journalist Who Investigated Gay Culture In The AFL Has Recalled The Intense Reactions She Received

Fans and those seeking a welcoming environment can expect to enjoy some classic Aussie football played by trailblazers in women’s sports. It's also a fantastic chance to celebrate personal identity and for allies to express their support for the LGBTQIA+ community.

Looking ahead to her Pride Round match, Richmond FC’s Libby Graham emphasized the “huge privilege” of being part of the AFLW Pride Round and representing the LGBTQIA+ community.

“AFLW is recognized for leading in this area. We are building on the efforts of those who came before us,” the key defender shared with PEDESTRIAN.TV.

“The progress in AFLW wouldn’t be possible without queer women and individuals. It’s a significant honor to acknowledge that history and contribute to the ongoing narrative.”

Teammate Rebecca ‘Bec’ Miller noted that the AFLW competition owes much to the queer community, with the Pride Round serving to highlight diversity and inclusivity and honor those who paved the way.

“The queer community essentially laid the groundwork for [the] AFLW before it gained popularity, even with limited resources,” she explained.

“They wore old men’s jumpers, dealt with poor facilities, yet played for the love of the game before financial compensation was available.

“Recognizing that history is crucial, as Libby mentioned, and celebrating it through a significant round, which has become a cherished tradition.”

The AFLW Now Has An Openly Non-Binary Player & They’re Eager To Use Their Platform For Education

With the AFLW Pride Round, the league has gone all out to represent and support the LGBTQIA+ community. This includes a rainbow on the iconic Sherrin and the NAB featuring a rainbow in its logo. Fans eagerly anticipate the Pride-designed guernsey worn by players on the field.

Melbourne FC’s Eden Zanker highlighted the 24 words featured on her club’s pride guernsey, which “were inspired by players, coaches, and staff following an educational session with Minus 18.”

“These words reflect our club’s commitment to inclusivity and our responsibility to provide a safe space for the LGBTQIA+ community,” Eden explained.

But why is the AFLW Pride Round so important?

Reflecting on my upbringing in a restrictive household, it was difficult to find support and understanding on my journey.

However, the AFLW Pride Round provides an opportunity for individuals to find role models and the support they need.

For Richmond’s Libby, the Pride Round is a perfect moment to spotlight the LGBTQIA+ community in both the sports world and the broader community.

“Visibility and representation are crucial,” Libby emphasized.

“Growing up, it would have been incredible to have this as the norm. We’re creating that now, ensuring people don’t have to search for visibility.”

Bec added that she appreciates how the Pride Round offers a platform for sharing stories and experiences, which contributes to the need for visibility and representation.

“People unfamiliar with this community hear stories of what it means to be queer, the challenges faced, all represented on our jumper,” Bec said, referring to Richmond FC’s Pride guernsey design.

Demons’ Eden also hopes spectators gain knowledge from the stories and language used during the Pride Round, emphasizing that education is vital for fostering inclusive and diverse environments.
